Underwater at Bajo Copé

Bajo Copé

Manta / La Plata Island · Ecuador

Bajo Copé is a submerged seamount rising to 18 metres, located in open water west of the Ecuadorian coast roughly midway between Manta and La Plata Island. The mount concentrates nutrients in the upwelling zone and acts as a magnet for large pelagics: silky sharks patrol the upper reaches, schools of yellowfin tuna sweep through on feeding runs, and oceanic mantas visit to feed in the plankton-rich water column. Deeper sections of the seamount host large grouper and amberjack. The site is remote and exposed, best suited to experienced divers comfortable with blue-water conditions and significant surge, but the pelagic density on a good day rivals anything in the Eastern Pacific.
