La Plata South Pinnacle
Manta / La Plata Island · Ecuador
The South Pinnacle rises from 35 metres to within 12 metres of the surface on the exposed southern tip of Isla de la Plata, channelling strong Humboldt upwellings that attract the most pelagic-dense aggregations around the island. Scalloped hammerheads appear in loose schools during June through September when cold water temperatures peak, while spotted eagle rays sweep the base of the pinnacle in groups. The hard substrate is colonised by black coral and sea fans adapted to the surge, and schools of Moorish idols and creole wrasse swirl around the peak. This is the island's most demanding site — current and surge are significant — but offers the best chance of multi-species pelagic encounters on a single dive.
