Between 2 and 6 individuals regularly circumnavigate the pinnacle, using the topographic acceleration of current around the rock to travel with minimum energy. Their presence at El Farallón reflects the reserve's effectiveness — Cuba's no-fishing zones have allowed reef shark populations to remain at ecological densities not seen in most of the wider Caribbean. Their patrol behaviour influences the distribution and behaviour of snapper and grouper across the entire pinnacle.

Caribbean Reef Shark is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
