Several large adults — some exceeding 150 kg — have been resident at Monkey Reef for years, using the deep coral heads as ambush posts and territorial anchors. As apex predators they regulate the density of smaller reef fish and maintain competitive balance among invertebrate communities. Cuba's fishing restrictions have allowed this IUCN-vulnerable species to persist here at densities almost absent from most Caribbean reefs.

Atlantic Goliath Grouper is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
