Queen Parrotfish

Scarus vetula

Sighting evidence at Monkey Reef, María la Gorda

Terminal phase males patrol defined territories across the reef crest, their turquoise and green patterning contrasting sharply against the cream sand. Their continuous grazing of algae-encrusted rock produces the white carbonate sand characteristic of the site's corridors — each large parrotfish can excrete hundreds of kilograms of sand per year. Their grazing prevents macroalgae from overgrowing the coral recruits regenerating across the plateau.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
