Longfin batfish — locally called spadefish — hover in stationary schools of 20 to 40 individuals around the American Tanker's uppermost hull, their large silver disc bodies creating a shimmering mobile canopy over the wreck in the mid-water column. These fish are highly site-faithful and the same school has reportedly been associated with the wreck for multiple diving generations, approaching divers with remarkable boldness.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
