At least two giant grouper — the world's largest bony reef fish, capable of exceeding 400 kg — are resident at the American Tanker, occupying the engine room and forward hold respectively. Their size and the depth of the wreck have protected them from spearfishing, and they have become accustomed to divers who visit regularly, allowing approaches of less than 2 m in good conditions.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
