Scorpionfish

Scorpaenopsis diabolus

Sighting evidence at American Tanker Wreck, Mariana Islands (Guam & Saipan)

Devil scorpionfish lie motionless along the entire length of the wreck's hull, their camouflage matching the encrusting coral and sponge so precisely that many divers pass within centimetres without noticing them. The wreck's broken surface texture and mixed lighting create ideal habitat for these ambush predators, and patient observers can find 8 to 12 individuals on a single careful circuit of the outer hull.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
