Grey reef sharks patrol the wall face outside the Blue Hole arch in groups of 3 to 10, taking advantage of the upwelling that the steep drop-off creates to ambush fish swept off the reef edge by current. Their frequency of appearance immediately on exiting the arch has made the Blue Hole a reliable shark encounter site even for divers who find open-ocean blue-water dives daunting.
