The interior walls of the Blue Hole chimney are lined with lionfish that hover motionless in the low-light zone between 10 and 25 m, relying on their cryptic posture and venomous spines to hold territory rather than flee approaching divers. These are among the most obliging subjects for wide-angle photography in the Marianas, their feathery pectoral fins spread wide in the subdued cavern light.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
