Large Napoleon wrasse — the males with their distinctive humped foreheads and fleshy lips — cruise the reef crest at Obyan singly or in pairs, investigating divers with a directness that reflects the absence of spearfishing pressure inside the MPA boundary. These animals can exceed 2 m in length and 190 kg, and a close encounter with one of the resident males at Obyan is one of the genuinely large-wildlife moments available in shallow tropical diving.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
