Common Sponge

Spongia officinalis

Sighting evidence at Aquarium Bay, Marmaris

Bath sponges and related species form substantial colonies on the deeper rock faces of Aquarium Bay, a reminder that the eastern Aegean was once one of the world's great natural sponge harvesting grounds. Their presence in good numbers reflects the clean, nutrient-rich water that characterises the bay. Nudibranchs and small crustaceans shelter among the sponge tissue, making any sponge a worthwhile focus for macro photography.
