Underwater at IJN Nagato

IJN Nagato

Dive site

The IJN Nagato was Admiral Yamamoto's flagship and the battleship from which Japan's Pearl Harbor attack was commanded. Sunk upside-down in the Able aerial bomb test of 1 July 1946 after surviving both detonations, she now lies inverted with her keel at 55 meters and her superstructure buried in the lagoon floor. Divers descend to the massive inverted hull, penetrating the outer gun turrets and exploring the barnacled propellers at depth. The wreck is densely colonised by black corals and large pelagics hover along the hull sides. Her historical significance and sheer scale make this one of the most evocative dives in the Pacific.
