IJN Sakawa

Dive site

The IJN Sakawa is a Agano-class light cruiser and the only vessel sunk in the Able aerial test of 1 July 1946 by blast rather than the underwater explosion. She lists heavily to starboard in 40 meters, her hull largely intact and her superstructure accessible to recreational divers. The Sakawa is covered in the most extensive soft coral growth of any Bikini wreck — vivid orange and purple sea fans drape her torpedo tubes and rangefinder platforms. Her relatively shallow profile allows longer bottom times than the deeper wrecks and makes her a favourite for photographers documenting the extraordinary transformation of a warship into a living reef.
