Diamond Rock
Martinique · France
Diamond Rock — Rocher du Diamant — is a 176-metre volcanic monolith rising from the sea off Martinique's southwestern tip, famous in naval history as HMS Diamond Rock, the only rock ever commissioned as a Royal Navy vessel. Underwater, the pinnacle's sheer sides are carpeted in deep-water gorgonians and black coral from 15 metres down, with strong currents on the open faces attracting large aggregations of tuna, jacks, and hammerhead sharks on seasonal passage. The rock's four dive faces offer completely different ecosystems within a single site.
