Longnose hawkfish perch on black coral branches and gorgonian fans inside Five Caves' archways, using their pectoral fins to grip the substrate while scanning for small invertebrate prey below. They are protogynous hermaphrodites — dominant females can change sex to become males — and the territorial structure inside the caves allows careful observation of their hierarchical social dynamics.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
