Plateau de Mamoudzou

Mayotte · France

A broad shallow coral plateau inside Mayotte's famous double lagoon, rising to within 5 metres of the surface and spreading across hectares of exceptionally diverse coral garden that has been protected from destructive fishing since the 1990s. The shallow depth and calm conditions inside the lagoon make this the ideal site for less experienced divers and underwater naturalists who want extended bottom time with sea turtles, napoleons, and clouds of reef fish. Visibility regularly exceeds 25 metres in the dry season, giving the impression of diving in an enormous aquarium.
