Memba Pinnacle
Memba Bay · Mozambique
A seamount that rises from 40 m to within 12 m of the surface, its flanks draped in black coral trees and enormous gorgonian fans that catch the current and feed. Eagle rays sweep past in pairs and small groups, their spotted backs catching any shaft of light that penetrates this deep. On the east face a dramatic wall drops vertically and the sheer scale of it — compressed blue space in every direction — gives the dive a sense of weightlessness that stays with you on the surface. Schooling barracuda form a silver tornado above the pinnacle's peak. This is a dive that demands respect and rewards skill!
