Black Rock

Mergui Archipelago · Myanmar

An isolated limestone pinnacle rising from 40 m in Myanmar's Andaman Sea, Black Rock holds the most documented giant manta ray population in Burma — 48 of Myanmar's 50 individually identified oceanic mantas have been recorded here by marine biologist Dr. Andrea Marshall. The western wall drops sharply past gorgonian fans to ledges at 22 m and beyond 50 m, where silvertip and grey reef sharks patrol in open water. February to April brings peak manta gatherings alongside occasional whale sharks, though planktonic blooms cut visibility to 10 to 15 m during those months. December to January offers the clearest water — 30 to 40 m — with sharks present throughout the year. Accessible only by liveaboard.
