Sail Rock
Mergui Archipelago · Myanmar
A single granite pinnacle named for its triangular sail-like profile above water, located in the northern sector of the Mergui Archipelago. Below the surface the rock descends as a near-vertical wall to 38 m on the west side and a stepped reef to 25 m on the east. The wall is dense with sea fans up to 2 m across, barrel sponges, and black coral trees. Silvertip sharks are present year-round at depth; a vertical chimney through the rock at 10 to 18 m is wide enough for single-file passage and is consistently used as a sleeping site by whitetip reef sharks. Whale sharks have been recorded here in March and April on most liveaboard routes.
