Underwater at Western Rocky

Western Rocky

Mergui Archipelago · Myanmar

Western Rocky is a granite pinnacle system at the southern edge of Myanmar's Mergui Archipelago, positioned where the Andaman Sea deepens sharply and pelagic traffic intensifies — this is the site where liveaboard guides bring divers specifically for open-water shark encounters, including oceanic whitetip and silky sharks that venture onto the plateau during the high season from December through March. The submerged rocks descend to 40 meters on three sides, with the western face exposed to prevailing swell and the heaviest coral growth. Leopard sharks rest on the sandy saddle at 18 meters between the main pinnacle and a smaller satellite rock, and schooling barracuda cloud the blue water above the peak on most morning dives.
