Tsigrado Sea Cave
Milos · Greece
Tsigrado is a hidden beach on Milos's southern coast bookended by towering volcanic cliffs, and below the waterline the cave system that carved this cove extends in magnificent fashion — long light-filled chambers with sandy floors at 10 metres give way to darker recesses colonised by large purple sea urchins and filter-feeding sponges. Thermal activity in the sediment warms patches of the sandy bottom noticeably, and bubbles occasionally percolate through the sand — a rare and eerie reminder that Milos is still volcanically alive. Cuttlefish gather here in spring to breed, filling the cave mouth with elaborate courtship displays.
