Underwater at North Channel Wall

North Channel Wall

Minicoy Island · India

The northern pass through Minicoy's reef rim drops almost vertically from 5 metres to beyond 50 metres and channels open-ocean current into the lagoon twice a day. Grey reef sharks cruise the wall edge, and large Napoleon wrasse move in and out of the channel with the tide. Overhangs at 20 to 30 metres carry dense orange and yellow soft-coral growth fed by the current. Drift is unavoidable when the tide is running — this is a site for experienced divers who are comfortable reading the water before they enter.
