Tuna Alley
Minicoy Island · India
A submerged ridge running south from Minicoy's outer reef that the island's traditional tuna fishermen — who still fish by pole-and-line from outriggers — have known for generations. Yellowfin and skipjack tuna use the ridge as a navigation waypoint and are often visible in large feeding schools at the surface, with the same schools cutting back down through the water column at depth. Spinner dolphins work the same ridge in the early morning. The reef on the ridge top is well-developed table coral; the sides drop into open blue.
