Underwater at Blue Whale Alley

Blue Whale Alley

Mirissa · Sri Lanka

A deep-water channel running southwest of Mirissa that funnels nutrient-rich upwellings and concentrates the world's largest animal in extraordinary numbers from January through April. Blue whales here feed on dense krill blooms and regularly surface within metres of snorkellers and free-divers, making this the single most reliable blue whale encounter on the planet. Sperm whales patrol the outer drop-off year-round, and pods of spinner dolphins escort boats on every run.
