Miyako Manta Scramble
Miyako Islands · Japan
Miyako's reef manta stations are among the most reliably productive in Japan, with resident animals using specific cleaning stations on the reef crest on an almost daily basis through most of the year. Divers kneel at depth while mantas glide overhead in slow loops, pausing over cleaning stations where wrasse pick parasites from their skin and gill plates. In peak season from autumn through spring, multiple individuals — sometimes 10 or more — stack in a cleaning queue, creating an experience that regularly features in Japan's top dive rankings.
