Mnemba South Wall
Mnemba Atoll · Tanzania
The south face of Mnemba Atoll drops in a series of dramatic terraces from 8 m down to 40 m, each ledge hosting its own community of coral and creatures. Hawksbill turtles are almost guaranteed here, threading between enormous sea fans with relaxed indifference to divers. Whitetip and blacktip reef sharks cruise the deeper terraces in small groups, and the wall itself is encrusted with so many soft corals that it resembles a living tapestry in shades of orange, purple, and white. The current running along the south face lifts plankton and draws in vast schools of fusiliers that shimmer like mercury when the light hits them.
