Mchaco (Bird Island)
Moheli Marine Park · Comoros
Mchaco is a striking white rock pinnacle at the eastern tip of Moheli, standing at the boundary between the protected lagoon and the open Indian Ocean. Strong currents sweep around the rock and push up nutrients that attract schools of pelagic fish — tuna, kingfish, barracuda, and occasionally manta rays. Reef sharks are resident. The advanced nature of this site comes from the current and air consumption at depth; the reward is the density of life that those currents bring. During flat conditions the site becomes accessible to intermediate divers, and the soft coral growth on the current-facing walls is outstanding.
