Mamula Island
Montenegro · Montenegro
Mamula Island anchors the entrance to Boka Kotorska Bay, its 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fortress rising above the Adriatic as the dive boats circle to access walls that plunge 40 metres into dense gorgonian forests and ancient amphora fields. The island's exposed southern point takes the full force of southern swells, creating a nutrient-rich upwelling that sustains large grouper, dentex, and amberjack hunting in the open blue. Underwater the fortress foundation stones are encrusted with red and yellow gorgonians, while scattered Roman-era amphorae on the seabed hint at the island's millennia as a maritime landmark.
