Mediterranean moray eels occupy crevices throughout the cave entrances and boulder fields, reaching up to 1.5 metres and providing a dramatic photographic subject against the sponge-encrusted rock. They hunt at night using an extraordinarily sensitive olfactory system, tracking fish and octopus by scent alone. Symbiotic cleaner wrasse are frequently observed servicing their mouths during daylight resting hours.

Moray Eel is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
