Dusky grouper are among the most ecologically important predators on Mediterranean rocky reefs, controlling populations of smaller fish and invertebrates. Large territorial males occupy prime boulder overhangs throughout the channel and are notably bold around divers. As a protected species in Greece, their presence here reflects effective local conservation.
