Underwater at Southern Amphora Plain

Southern Amphora Plain

Dive site

South of the Nessebar peninsula a broad sandy plain slopes to 16 metres where scattered amphorae fragments and larger intact vessels mark ancient Byzantine-era trade routes. The Black Sea's anoxic deep layer and cold, low-salinity water have preserved ceramic cargo that would have dissolved in warmer, more oxygenated seas. The plain is punctuated by low rocky outcrops supporting sponge and soft coral growth, and the sandy corridors are productive ground for Black Sea gobies, turbot, and in season the spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas). Divers report the sensation of swimming through an underwater museum; access requires a dive permit as the site has partial archaeological protection.
