Schools of great barracuda — some individuals exceeding 1.5 meters — station themselves in the mid-water of the pass, using the current to maintain position effortlessly while scanning for small fish to ambush. Their silvery torpedo bodies and large fang-filled jaws are built for explosive acceleration rather than sustained chase, and they play an important mesopredator role keeping populations of smaller fish in balance without competing directly with apex sharks.

Great Barracuda is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
