Ana Ana Canyon

Niue Reef · Niue

Ana Ana, meaning cave-cave in Niuean, is a system of intersecting swim-throughs and canyons on the southwest coast where the limestone shelf is riddled with passages wide enough for two divers side by side. The deepest sections reach 28 metres where sandy gullies channel mild current and attract hunting whitetip reef sharks at dusk. Katuali sea kraits are regularly encountered in the overhangs, and the ceilings of the larger chambers are encrusted with orange cup corals that fluoresce brilliantly under torchlight. A dedicated night dive here is one of Niue's signature experiences, with sleeping parrotfish, hunting morays, and the surreal blue-white glow of bioluminescent plankton in the open passages.
