Limu Pools
Niue Reef · Niue
Limu on Niue's west coast is a series of interconnected marine pools formed where wave-eroded limestone terraces meet the outer reef. Below the pools, the reef slopes down through a series of coral ridges to a sandy bottom at 25 metres before the wall takes over and drops away. The site is unusually calm compared to the exposed north coast walls, making it the most reliable dive in rough trade-wind conditions. Resident green turtles, large parrotfish, and Napoleon wrasse forage across the terrace, and the shallow ceilings of the overhanging pools make for dramatic wide-angle photography. Humpback whale song is audible here during the July to September season.
