Laje dos Dois Irmãos
Fernando de Noronha · Brazil
A submerged basalt shelf stretching north from the iconic Dois Irmãos twin peaks, rising to 5 meters at its shallowest before dropping over a coral-draped wall to 30 meters. This is Fernando de Noronha's most reliable site for oceanic whitetip sharks, which cruise the blue water off the wall edge, drawn by the upwelling currents that funnel past the archipelago's northern tip. Bull sharks appear seasonally in the austral summer. Resident spinner dolphin pods from the Baía dos Golfinhos often work the current line above the shelf. The plateau itself is carpeted in brain coral and lettuce coral with dense populations of sergeant major, chromis, and queen angelfish.
