Underwater at Shark Channel

Shark Channel

Nosy Iranja · Madagascar

Shark Channel runs through the passage between Nosy Iranja Be and Nosy Iranja Kely, where tidal movement concentrates fish and brings predators in to feed. Whitetip and grey reef sharks are the primary residents, often found resting on the sandy channel floor between tidal pushes. When current is running, the channel transforms into an active drift dive with dense schools of jacks and fusiliers filling the water column, and sharks actively hunting in the turbulence. Hammerhead sharks have been recorded here on occasion, particularly in the cooler months from June to September. The site suits intermediate and experienced divers best given the variable current, but calm-period dives are rewarding for all levels. Night dives reveal hunting sharks and a spectacular invertebrate display across the channel walls.
