Hawaiian Lionfish

Dendrochirus barberi

Sighting evidence at Sea Tiger Wreck, Oahu

The endemic Hawaiian dwarf lionfish is a cryptic resident of the Sea Tiger's shaded undercuts, hovering motionless among the wreck's encrusting sponges and waiting to ambush small crustaceans and fish. Unlike its Indo-Pacific relatives it occurs nowhere else on Earth, and the wreck's complex structure provides the sheltered microhabitats this species depends on.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
