Cuckoo Wrasse

Labrus mixtus

Sighting evidence at Garvellachs Islands, Oban

Male cuckoo wrasse rank among the most vividly coloured fish in British waters, their electric blue and orange patterning rivalling any tropical species. They are highly curious and will approach divers closely, often hovering just outside arm's reach to examine their reflection in a camera port. Females are orange-pink with black and white markings, and all individuals begin life female before some transition to male.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
