Stalked Jellyfish

Haliclystus auricula

Sighting evidence at Garvellachs Islands, Oban

Stalked jellyfish attach themselves to kelp fronds and seagrass blades in the Garvellachs' sheltered bays, remaining stationary and filter-feeding with eight clusters of tentacles radiating from a central disk. These extraordinary and overlooked animals are rarely noticed without deliberate searching, but shallow kelp dives here regularly turn up multiple species of stauromedusae. Scotland hosts the greatest diversity of stalked jellyfish in the world.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
