Minamijima Arch
Ogasawara · Japan
Minamijima — a restricted uninhabited island at the southern tip of the Ogasawara chain accessible only by permit on licensed tour boats — hosts one of the Pacific's most dramatic volcanic arches at 18 m. The arch spans roughly 20 m and frames a curtain of golden anthias over hard coral terraces carpeted in tabletop Acropora. Visibility regularly exceeds 40 m in summer. Green turtles rest on ledges above the arch; white-tip reef sharks patrol the sandy channel below. The wrought-iron butterflyfish (Chaetodon daedalma), endemic to the southern Izu and Ogasawara islands, appears in small groups on the deeper coral slopes. Light penetration through the arch at midday creates exceptional photography conditions.
