Zanpa Point
Okinawa Main Island · Japan
Zanpa Point anchors the northwestern tip of Okinawa Main Island beneath the historic Cape Zanpa Lighthouse. A coral reef shelf at 5 to 12 metres gives way to a wall and sloping reef descending beyond 30 metres, swept by consistent currents that aggregate pelagic species. Large schools of fusiliers and jacks patrol the point while reef sharks and barracuda appear on stronger currents. The shallower reef flat is dense with hard coral and hosts an abundance of macro subjects including robust ghost pipefish, ornate ghost pipefish, and thorny seahorses. A genuine crossroads site that rewards both macro and wide-angle shooters.
