Fusilier Reef
Osezaki · Japan
A broad sloping reef from 8 to 28 metres where Suruga Bay's productive currents concentrate enormous schools of yellowtail fusiliers that at peak season number in the tens of thousands. The school forms a shimmering curtain that divers can enter, surrounded by fish on all sides, while yellowfin tuna and amberjack patrol the school's periphery making high-speed predatory runs. The reef base hosts encrusting sponges, sea fans, and occasional octopus in the rubble. This is the best site for wide-angle photography when the school is thick, typically April through June and September through November.
