Shark Ledge
Osezaki · Japan
A series of broad sand and rubble ledges between 20 and 30 metres where whitetip reef sharks gather to rest during daylight hours, often lying motionless in groups of three to six individuals beneath overhangs. The sharks are habituated to divers and allow close approach, making this one of the most reliable shark encounters in Japan. The surrounding reef is characterised by large boulder formations with crevices hosting lionfish, scorpionfish, and juvenile moray eels. At dusk the sharks become active and hunt the reef alongside banded sea kraits.
