Frying Pan Shoals

North Carolina Outer Banks · United States

Frying Pan Shoals extends 30 miles into the Atlantic south of Cape Fear, creating a vast shallow-water reef system where the warm Gulf Stream collides with the continental shelf. The resulting upwelling makes this one of the most productive marine environments on the US East Coast. Shallow reef structures from 30 to 80 feet host hard and soft corals unusual for these latitudes, while the deeper edges drop to ledges thick with black coral trees. Large tiger sharks, bull sharks, and hammerheads patrol the outer edges seasonally. The remains of the Frying Pan Shoals Lightship, retired in 1964, adds a wreck element accessible to recreational divers. Surface conditions can be rough due to the exposed location and converging currents.
