U-352
North Carolina Outer Banks · United States
U-352 is one of only a handful of intact German WWII U-boats accessible to recreational divers anywhere in the world. Sunk in May 1942 by the US Coast Guard Cutter Icarus after a failed torpedo attack, she rests on her starboard side in 115 feet of water roughly 26 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras. The conning tower, torpedo tubes, deck gun, and pressure hull are all clearly recognizable despite eight decades of marine growth. Sand tiger sharks congregate here in extraordinary numbers from late spring through fall — 20 or more individuals circling the wreck simultaneously is routine. Current runs hard over the exposed hull, adding to the atmosphere of a genuinely challenging wreck dive that rewards careful planning.
