Shark Reef Marine Reserve
Pacific Harbour & Beqa Lagoon · Fiji
Shark Reef Marine Reserve is a designated no-take zone operated by the local Fiji community since 2004, protecting a pinnacle that drops from 12 to over 30 metres in Beqa Lagoon. Up to eight shark species congregate here during structured feed dives: bull sharks dominate the lower platform at 30 metres while whitetip and grey reef sharks circle the upper level at 20 metres, and occasional tiger sharks appear in the deeper water. The site has been studied continuously for over 20 years and is one of the longest-running shark baited dive programmes in the world, with population data showing stable bull shark numbers across the decade.
