Iro Maru

Blue Corner · Palau

A 143 m Imperial Japanese Navy fleet oiler torpedoed by USS Tunny and finished off by US carrier aircraft during Operation Desecrate One in March 1944, sitting upright in 40 m of water in the Urukthapel anchorage south of Koror. The signature feature is the bow gun, a deck cannon on its circular platform around 27 m, smothered in soft coral and sponges with anemonefish in the tendrils; an identical aft gun sits past the loading kingposts. Masts rise to 8 m below the surface and make a long descent line down to the main deck at 25 m. Penetration of cargo holds and bridge is open to divers with wreck training. Glassfish school in the holds, lionfish stake out the kingposts, and batfish patrol the deck.
