Octopus

Octopus mimus

Sighting evidence at La Catedral, Paracas

The Paracas octopus (Octopus mimus) is the dominant macro predator inside La Catedral's shaded recesses, hunting crabs and bivalves along the cup-coral-encrusted walls and retreating to den sites in crevices packed with discarded crab shells. These intelligent cephalopods exhibit extraordinary colour-change displays inside the arch, cycling through patterns of white, brown, and deep red as they navigate between sunlit and shaded sections of the grotto. Divers who hover quietly at den entrances are frequently treated to extended observations as the octopus ventures out to hunt, unbothered by non-threatening human observers.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
