CEADS hosts some of the largest and most approachable dusky grouper populations on the southeastern Brazilian coast, a direct consequence of decades without fishing pressure. These long-lived, sex-changing fish begin life as females and transition to males as they age and grow, meaning the largest individuals are always male. Their curious, almost fearless behavior around divers at CEADS stands in stark contrast to the skittish individuals found at openly fished reef sites nearby.

Dusky Grouper is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
